In May, I will be teaching workshops and presenting PowerPoint sessions for an entire week to the Central Oregon Spinners and Weavers Guild in Redmond, OR. I was delighted to learn that the enrollment opened early and the classes filled up very quickly. Not all weavers are interested in garment-making, as cutting your own handwoven fabric can be intimidating. However, this enthusiastic group has signed up, and I am looking forward to working with them.
Preparing for this experience involves finding ways to analyze the studio process tasks I have practiced for years, using images and descriptions presented in a logical order. I hope that my experience in garment-making will inspire them to find their inner designer and approach their projects with confidence.
One unique aspect of my workshops is that I encourage students to create an original design. This process involves understanding the basics of garment-making with handwoven fabric, exploring what the fabric and garment patterns can achieve, and discovering ways to personalize the garment to make it uniquely their own. Many weavers have other textile techniques in their repertoire, and I will encourage them to think outside the box and incorporate these techniques into their designs.
Soon, I will visit the printer and place an order for these instructional materials to be printed. I am so grateful to my friend with an editor's eye.
The next blog post will have pictures of the results!
