My scarves and shawls focus on being color stories inspired by living in the Pacific Northwest or
other places I have traveled. The color is approached in a painterly way . Many different yarns are
used to make the color transistions from one edge of the piece to the other.
The weave structures I choose tell a story, too. The twill found in many of my pieces is the best way
I had to capture the effect of the wind and the tides on the Nestucca River that I see from my
studio window. In this way a small "Pacific Northwest" story is told.
A series, called "Spring Twigs" uses an 8 harness twill to capture the texture of the buds on the
alder trees right before they leaf out for Spring. Watching the ocean has taught me another way to
use color. There are many shades of blue in the water depending on temperature and depth. Using
this idea in the scarf color ways makes for a more lively fabric and richer color.
